Tool
Home Energy CO2 Estimator
Estimate annual CO2 from home electricity, natural gas, heating oil and LPG.
Method
UK DEFRA 2024 factors: electricity 0.20705 kg/kWh, gas 0.18290 kg/kWh, heating oil 2.54016 kg/L, LPG 1.51 kg/L (approximate, EPA-based).
Limitations
Combustion-only factors. Replace the grid factor with your local verified factor for a non-UK home; otherwise the result is an estimate, not a bill-accurate figure.
Home energy CO2 estimator
Annual estimate in kg CO2e. Leave a fuel blank if you do not use it — blank counts as 0.
Enter at least one value above to see your breakdown.
Result: 0.00 kg CO2e per year (0.00 tonnes)
- Electricity: 0.00 kg (—)
- Natural gas: 0.00 kg (—)
- Heating oil: 0.00 kg (—)
- LPG (approximate factor): 0.00 kg (—)
UK 2024 factors, combustion only. Replace the grid factor with your local grid's factor if you are outside the UK. Sources: DESNZ/DEFRA Conversion Factors 2024; LPG per US EPA GHG Protocol factors.
Frequently asked questions
What does the Home Energy CO2 Estimator calculate?
It estimates annual CO2 from home electricity, natural gas, heating oil and LPG, with a breakdown by fuel, in kg and tonnes per year.
Which factors does the home energy tool use?
It uses UK DEFRA 2024 factors: electricity 0.20705 kg per kWh, natural gas 0.18290 kg per kWh and heating oil 2.54016 kg per litre. LPG uses 1.51 kg per litre, labelled approximate.
Can I use this tool outside the UK?
Yes, if you replace the grid factor with your local verified factor. The default grid factor is the UK 2024 figure, so a non-UK home using the default gets a UK-flavoured estimate, not a bill-accurate local figure.
Are vehicle manufacture or fuel production included?
No. The factors are combustion-only for the fuels shown, so fuel production, vehicle manufacture and other upstream emissions are excluded and stated on the page.
What if I only know my annual bill, not my kWh?
The tool needs energy quantities in kWh or litres, not money amounts, because prices vary. Your energy bill or meter readings usually show the kWh or litre figures the tool asks for.
